What is a LOLER Inspection?

 

LOLER stands for Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998.

A LOLER inspection or test is a meticulous observation of lifting equipment, carried out by a qualified or ‘competent’ person, as stated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Sometimes known as an insurance inspection.

   

Comparable to a car MOT, Lift's require a regular check to ensure that the equipment is safe for people to use and operate. Similar as with a car where it is illegal to drive it without an MOT, it is also illegal for a lift to operate without a current LOLER certificate.

 

HOW OFTEN SHOULD A LIFT BE INSPECTED?

 

Any type of equipment that moves people requires 2 LOLER tests per year.

For lifts which are designed to carry goods only then 1 inspection per year is needed.

Thorough Examinations should also take place if considerable changes are made to the lift. 

 

YOUR LOLER CERTIFICATE

 

Following the meticulous observation, you should obtain a written and signed report which analyses:

• The equipment which has been examined, along with the make and serial number, and premises

• The date of the previous examination as well as the date when the next one should be carried out

• The safe working load of the lift

• The reason for the inspection

• The specifics of the tests carried out

• Any faults which are or may become a danger

• The technicalities of any repair, renewal or adjustment required to mend the defect and the date by which it should be undertaken

• The details of the person carrying out the inspection
